"The trial against the man police are calling the possible "Baseline Killer" took an interesting twist Thursday. Shortly after prosecutors rested their case, Mark Goudeau’s defense team rested their case even though they never called a witness to the stand. Goudeau faces 74 felonies in connection with a string of crimes including nine murders dating back to 2005.
Goudeau maintains police have the wrong man. Prosecutors in court have called Goudeau a “wolf in sheep’s clothing.” The trial began in June and was expected to wrap up in January. The latest court room developments now mean closing arguments will take place Oct. 17 with the jury beginning deliberations shortly thereafter.
Goudeau’s defense team believes they have been able to create doubt during cross examination of witnesses over the past few months. If convicted, Goudeau faces the death penalty. The 47-year old has already been convicted for sexually assaulting two sisters in a south Phoenix park and sentenced to more than 400 years."
