A Driver’s Guide to Arizona DUI Laws

Last updated 7 years ago

As all DUI defense lawyers know, drinking and driving is a terrible idea. The consequences are drastic for yourself and those around you. While it may seem like you only live a few minutes away, it only takes one instant for your life to change forever.

If you’re caught driving over the limit, then you will be met by the state’s severe DUI penalties. In general, if you think you’ve had too much to drink, then it’s best to call a cab, friend, or family member to take you home.

For those of you who live in Arizona, here’s a guide to your state’s DUI Laws:

  • Blood Alcohol Content: You are considered impaired if your blood alcohol content is above .08. It’s difficult to determine your BAC by the amount you drink, as the measurement varies depending on your weight and height.
  • Penalties: Penalties for a DUI offense vary depending on the number of times you’ve committed the offense.  If it’s your first time being charged with a DUI, then you’ll face between 24 hours and 10 days in jail. Your license will be suspended for 90 days to a year. Moreover, you’ll have to pay heavy fines, usually well over one thousand dollars. Finally, you’ll probably have to go through a mandatory education class before you are allowed to drive again.
  • Further Offenses: For repeat offenders, jail time increases to a minimum of 30 days. You’ll face heavier fines—expect to pay well over two thousand dollars—and a year-long license suspension.

DUI is taken very seriously in Arizona, and you should always think twice before you drive after drinking. Whether it’s New Year’s or a casual work karaoke night, plan your rides in advance if you plan on drinking.
